ACQUISITION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE LANGUAGE IN CHILDREN WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS: REVIEW OF RESEARCH

ABSTRACT: this paper reviews the current work carried out on main investigations about the development of the language in children with visual deficiency. In the past twenty years, it was verified that the research has been fruitful; however, some controversies have persisted because of the impossibility of generalization of the results and methodological issues. Concerning Brazilian studies, few investigations deal with acquirement process and the language development of the population. Despite of a vast foreign literature regarding this subject, it is necessary further researches aiming new approaches in intervention methodologies and special educational programs.
