ABSTRACT: This article deals with the literacy of mentally retarded persons in a framework of a constructive-interactive theory of literacy process and of a critical and emancipoted conception of school. lts context should be understood as an open work, or as an educational itinerary centered on theoretical guidelines. The work as based on the daily praxis of reading and writing, what this activity signified for children, and how they felt about it.
