Educational services to the mentally deficient in the municipal school system of São Paulo: Characterization and analysis of the “SAPENE’s”

ABSTRACT: A research has been carried out with purpose of analyse the effectiveness of SAPNE’s (portuguese denomination for “Attendance Classes for People with Special Needs”) as an integrational resource for the mentally deficient student in the Regular School System of São Paulo city. It has been possible to characterize implementation practice of such classes that have been used, as well as their contribution to the education process of students who require special teaching methods. Information have been collected regarding installation and operating conditions of twenty-two classes, what represented the SAPNE’s universe in the year of 1997. The characterization obtained in the study raises questions which embrace since destination of the classes (if they have been really devoted to mentally deficient students) until their potential contribution to the integration in the regular school of these students.
